The nature of the human world as well as their Military technique’s make them the leader in Military technology by miles, with standard issue power suits for ground forces, the entire concept of Orbital insertion, air support and deep space carriers being introduced by the humans. SICON is a democracy, with each former earth nation state, and Human colony earning a seat in the SICON Parliament with the majority seat holder winning said election with the party head becoming the Prime minster, Underneath them is the Star Marshal, commander in chief of the SICON Navy, and the ODT’s or Orbital Drop Teams… highly trained and equipped soldiers who go through a strict selection process. SICON was formed after the Pluto attacks from several of the earths major nation states, pushing aside the last barriers to unification. The Strategically Integrated Collation of Nations: The Humans, the youngest race in the group as well as the craziest, Hailing from a death world on the edge of the galaxy where everything can and will kill you they are a society still recovering from finding out aliens even exist and there conflict with them. Thus: pre-combat negotiations, tricks, hijinks (my partner, carrying a cargo of "domestic goods," chose to have her crew throw individual toasters out of the cargo bay each in different directions to ensure that the pirates had to engage in lengthy EVA-missions to catch them each, thus allowing her ship to escape without suffering damage). They want to take their cargo and get away as quickly as possible, suffering the least damage as possible, and the players want the opposite. The fact that the party is always carrying their life savings in trade commodities whenever they travel around makes them a prime target for piracy, and leads to combat with stakes beyond "fight till everyone's dead." The pirates aren't orcs, and don't want to kill the players for no reason. 'Pirates' in Traveller are spaceship owners unable to pay their mortgages by legitimate means, so turn to piracy. Every time the party jumps from one world to another, there's a chance they'll get waylaid by pirates (the rulebook has a fun, albeit hidden, 'pirate table' that describes different tricks and hijinks that pirates use to attack).
I've already spoken at length on the subject of random encounters here, but Traveller really builds the game around random tables in an elegant way. Mordin fell under that category which meant it was a no-go. That’s when you declare things like drug references in your game. Til the fateful day we were told MEA had already been submitted to the ratings board. Bless him, he came in on a Saturday to do a special hallucination showing Mordin himself. It got even better when our cine designer John Ebenger wanted to take it even further. As a nod to him I wrote SAM singing Modern Major-General. Who else in the ME game sings unexpectedly? MORDIN. It occurred to me, wouldn’t it be amusing if Ryder had the option of actually trying ‘the medicine’ to see what would happen? And I thought, what if it turned into some hallucination that somehow involved SAM - like maybe SAM would sing? But why? How could I motivate that? Then it hit me. I thought it’d be amusing if these 2 guys living way out on the fringes in a shack were growing plants for uh, medicinal purposes, and needed Ryder’s help with it. John Dombrow explains: “One day I had to write a small quest for Kadara. It wasn’t cut due to running out of time however, it was cut due to drug references.
